Most women in North Carolina moved from Virginia and most of them were servants or women who married poor farmers. The proprietors of North Carolina encouraged women to come to the colonies and often women who were indentured servants received land after their period of servitude. Social ClassLord Proprietors, the people that were granted royal charters to establish an English colony, had complete authority over all lands in North Carolina. Below the Lord Proprietors were known as the nobility class. These people could participate in local parliament and own land. After the nobility class came the "freemen". These "freemen could own land but has a limited role in government.
